Since the beginning of my career, I have been working frontline with kids, families or teachers. (I love it! ) And, the last couple of years I have been imagining how do I reach out? Connect? Share what I have learned and share ideas? Become engaged in the larger conversation happening in my field?
These imaginings led me to step into the tech world and create a start-up, Open Sesame Studios based in Victoria, BC. I initially teamed up with graduate students at the Centre for Digital Media in Vancouver, and we developed the "Facts of Life App" which was published on Google Play and the App Store. It was translated into Simplified Chinese and also published on Android Stores in China. I then partnered with UVic and with funding from BCIC, put together a team of my own. The new "Facts of Life Interactive" is almost ready to launch!
I then signed with Orca Book Publishers and started writing a series for young children called, "Just Enough." The first in the series, "Where Do Babies Come From? Our First Talk about Birth" was launched last month and has already been purchased by every major library in Canada and also by many, many libraries in the US.
The media attention for both the Apps and book series has been phenomenal!
I began to envision a larger message, a message about how to help kids live in our changing world. I imagined a caring, integrity-enriched, adult problem-solver of the 21st Century--and I worked backwords. What would we need to teach our children & how would we need to teach them in order to set them on the path of becoming a problem solver who cares?
In my mind's eye, I could see ways that technology could underpin and support and guide this developmental path way.
I have felt a kind of unbridled hope that has filled me with renewed energy. I have begun to reach out personally to leaders in the field and I am loving the discussions that are beginning to take place.
Just imagine what we could accomplish together!
