The ideas that I have been sharing with you have been incubating in my mind for a long time.
In 1994, I started to study children and families with HIV/AIDS at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. I was intereted in better understanding the first hand experiences of people living with HIV. My interest was sparked by the death of my cousin from AIDS--one of the first Canadians to die from the illness. I was puzzled how human love and connection could lead to such pain. I promised myself that someday I would help young people better understand human sexuality. My studies led to trying to better understand how to tell children that they were infected (or their parents were infected) with the virus.
I followed this research up with investigations of other childhood illness and disfigurements (including congenital heart disease, epilepsy, and cancer). This work led to another book, this one about congenital heart disease. I walked a heart wrenching journey with parents whose children could die at any time, or had already passed away.
All of this work has led to my "Just Enough Series" with Orca. The first book is about sexuality, the second about death, the third about changing/transitioning families and the fourth is about celebrating diversity and differences. The fifth? I have a hunch it will be about helping children understand climate change!
These ideas have percolated for more than 20 years!
