Today I had the pleasure of sitting down with Gregor Craigie, the host of the popular CBC radio program "On the Island," We discussed the challenging times children face in today's age, and the particular challenges of today's children who experience trauma. You can listen to our conversation this Monday, May 23rd at 7:50am on CBC radio.
I have been most concerned in recent weeks with the children who escaped the fires in Fort McMurray. The TV images of burnt neighbourhoods have been difficult for me to process, and I can only imagine how hard it must be for the children who lost their homes.
I recall my late father talking about surviving a house fire in Tillsonburg, Ontario, in the late 1930s. He remembers being thrown from a second floor window. He was only a small child at the time, but the image of the burning farmhouse stayed with him for a lifetime.
As you know, I write the "Just Enough Series" for Orca Book Publishers. Four books have been written, and two more have been contracted. One of upcoming books will be about helping children cope with tragedy.
During my interview with Gregor Craigie, I offered to help any family of Fort McMurray who reaches out. On the home page of this blog, there is an "ask a question" button. If you need help, send me a message. I will do my best to be of help or put you in contact with a person in your region who can be of help. Please do not be shy. Reach out!
